How to turn Blue Monday into Mindful Monday

Blue Monday is the name given to the third Monday of January every year, and according to the organisation that coined it as such, it's the most depressing day of the year! Of course, here at HCA will not hear of such a thing, and quite rightly have decided to replace it with 'Mindful Monday'!

With Monday being the start of the working week for many, it seems fitting that we should be mindful of what's ahead, and to try and be present in the moment.

"Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us."

So how can we turn the messaging of Blue Monday on its head and positively charge into Mindful Monday...?

Firstly, if today or any other day is particularly hard for you, then recognise it. Paying attention to your breath is a great way to practice mindfulness and it will soften the emotions which are present. Whether this is sadness, anxiety, frustration, anger or a feeling of tiredness, bringing awareness to where your breath feels most prominent will really help. Repeat this a few times.

Secondly, as the definition above states - try not to be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what's going on around you. We all have our own individual issues to deal with, but collectively we are all facing challenges around economic, climate, social and healthcare, which can spiral out of control and context in our minds.

Start to think of ways you can deal with these issues which are beyond your control. Whether that's turning the notifications off on your phone for news alerts, and understanding what your limits are, or taking time out - do what works for you.

Be mindful.

Finally, be mindful of your choices and how they impact your overall happiness. Don't just 'rinse and repeat' if it's not getting you to where you want to be or how you want to feel.

Let today be your first day of many 'Mindful Monday's' and blow 'Blue Monday' out of the water!
