Why Human Health Coaches Still Matter in Mental Health
Steve Peralta on healing, human connection and the limits of AI
Published: 3rd July 2026
Can AI support mental health without replacing human connection?
In this episode, Zena speaks with Steve Peralta, co-founder and former Chief Wellbeing Officer of Unmind, a workplace mental health platform supporting over 2 million employees globally. Steve opens up about his own catastrophic breakdown in 2024, what healing really looks like, and why true flourishing has nothing to do with self-optimisation.
He also shares a refreshingly honest take on AI in mental health and coaching, what it can genuinely support, and where human presence remains irreplaceable.
What you’ll learn in this episode:
Why a proactive, preventative approach to mental health beats simply treating problems
How managers can shape our wellbeing even more than therapists
What genuinely helps when nothing else seems to work
Where AI can support your mental health and coaching, and where it simply can't
Why human Health Coaches still matter
How true flourishing comes from becoming whole, not from self-optimisation
Honest, grounded, and deeply human, this conversation is a must-listen for Health Coaches, offering rich insight into what truly supports healing, how to hold space for clients with real presence, and why human connection remains at the heart of lasting change, even in a world of AI.

Steve Peralta - TEDx Speaker, Coach & Co-Founder of Unmind
Our guest, Steve Peralta, is a TEDx speaker with years of experience helping leaders and teams think more honestly about mental health, human sustainability, and the pressure underneath modern work. He is also the co-founder of Unmind, one of the world's leading workplace mental health platforms, supporting over two million employees at organisations including Disney, Uber, and British Airways.
But Steve's path into this work has been anything but conventional. He began as a musician, jazz singer, and theatre actor before moving into personal training, coaching, and eventually workplace wellbeing. Over nearly a decade at Unmind, he helped build a platform dedicated to making mental health part of everyday working life.
Then, in 2024, Steve experienced his own health crisis and breakdown, one that changed everything. He's open about the fact that "burnout" doesn't quite cover what happened. What followed was a deeply honest reckoning with his body, his nervous system, and patterns he'd been carrying for years.
Today, Steve brings that lived experience into his work as a coach, speaker, and facilitator, offering a perspective on mental health and real healing that is hard-won, grounded, and genuinely human.
Steve reminds us “Don’t use wellbeing as another way to run away from yourself or your truth.”
