As awareness around self-care, lifestyle medicine, and preventative health continues to grow, the role of a Health & Wellness Coach is becoming increasingly valued. Whether you're fascinated by wellness, looking for a meaningful new career, or want to make a genuine difference in people’s lives, becoming a Health Coach might be exactly the path you’ve been searching for. But what qualifications do you actually need to become a Health Coach?
Do You Need Experience or Prior Qualifications to become a Health Coach?
The simple answer is no—there are no specific qualifications, degrees, or prior experience required to get started. You don’t need to be a healthcare professional or come from a background in wellness. In fact, many of our students join us from completely different industries. What truly matters is a genuine passion for health, wellbeing, and a desire to make a positive impact in other people’s lives.
If you're someone who loves learning about wellness, nutrition, and behaviour change—and you want to support others in achieving better health—then you’re in the right place. We teach you everything you need to know from the ground up.
Do You Need Any Particular Skills?
The HCA Level 5 Diploma in Health & Wellness Coaching provides you with the full toolkit you need to become a confident, competent and impactful coach. Our comprehensive training includes:
Effective communication and active listening
Empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence
Motivational interviewing and coaching conversations
Goal-setting and habit formation
Behaviour change models and psychology
Time management and client retention strategies
Nutritional foundations and healthy lifestyle planning
We don’t expect you to have these skills when you start—we’ll equip you with them through hands-on practice, expert support and structured learning. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in your ability to support others to make meaningful, long-term changes to their health and wellbeing.
What is a Level 5 Qualification in Health Coaching?
Our leading certification is a Level 5 Diploma in Health & Wellness Coaching—but what does that actually mean?
In the UK education system, a Level 5 qualification is generally equivalent to the second year of a Bachelor's degree. It’s also comparable to a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Foundation Degree. This level of study reflects an in-depth, comprehensive approach—far more than a weekend course or a short online programme.
Crucially, our course is also accredited by Qualifi, the Association for Coaching and Personalised Care Institute (PCI) and approved by the UK & International Health Coaching Association (UKIHCA) and COMENSA. That means it meets strict standards of quality and professionalism, giving you and your future clients peace of mind.
“Surely a Health Coach Doesn’t Have the Same Knowledge as a Nutritionist or Dietician?”
This is a question we’re asked often, and it’s an important one.
The truth is, the scope of practice of a Health Coach is different from that of a Nutritional Therapist (NT) or Dietician. We do not diagnose or prescribe medical nutritional therapy. What we do offer is just as vital: we support clients in making sustainable lifestyle changes, developing healthier habits, and sticking with them over time.
Here’s a quick comparison:
Role | Qualification | Scope of Practice |
Health Coach | 12-month Level 5 Diploma | Supports behaviour change, builds habits, guides lifestyle changes, supports emotional/mental wellbeing around food and health. Also plays a key role in supporting clients who want to prevent or reduce the risk of chronic illnesses through proactive lifestyle support. |
Nutritional Therapist (NT) | 3–4 year degree/diploma | Creates personalised nutritional plans, addresses dietary imbalances, recommends supplements |
Dietician | 4-year full-time degree (HCPC registered) | Works within clinical settings, prescribes diets for medical conditions, provides advanced medical nutrition therapy |
Health Coaches are skilled in bridging the gap between the advice that they may have received and what might work practically in real-life. While Nutritional Therapists and Dietitians offer in-depth expertise in nutritional science, Health Coaches excel in providing the support, motivation, and accountability that help turn expert guidance into lasting, meaningful habits.
These roles complement one another perfectly, offering clients a well-rounded and empowering approach to achieving their health and wellbeing goals. This is why many Nutritional Therapists, Dieticians and other Health Care Professionals join our course, adding Health Coaching to their offerings/skillset.

“I trained to become a Health Coach because I had been struggling to move some of my clients forward. When I gave them recommendations, some of them were not following through with the changes. With health coaching, I found that I could support my clients in a more empowering way. I could work on their mindset, hold them accountable and move them forward.
It was the missing link in my nutrition practice, and for me it has been a game changer. I now know how to support my clients more and that has given me much more confidence and I have a lot more tools to use when my clients get stuck.” - Registered Nutritionist & Health Coach, Awele Anne Anyia
